Paper Towel Free…Not Quite

It has been a little over six months since we have started down the “no paper towel” route.   I feel like it has been successful in that the Costco size paper towel package we purchased way back only has two rolls missing.

Generally, my handyman still uses them in his shop.  Cleaning up glue seems to require something other than my new Norwex cloths!

For my part, the one area I can’t seems to overcome is when we cook bacon.  I can’t bring myself to drain bacon on a cloth.  Maybe it’s just me.  What about you?  Do you still use paper or have you found something different to drain your bacon.

The little Norwex house, “Counter Cloths and Box Set”  have been fabulous.  At first they sat in my cupboard but when I eventually put them on my counter within easy reach, I started using them.  Because the little house is so handy, I also lay my current, usually damp, counter cloth over the top of the wire house.  Benefit – it dries on all sides and is right there to go to work.  You don’t end up using several because you always know which one is current.

My Counter cloths and Little House

We wash dishes by hand, using the Netted cloths…love them by the way, link here.  They are not, however, very good at just wiping the counter.  They tend to leave way too much water on the surface.  This is the time I grab my Counter Cloth and wipe everything dry.  Check out these features and benefits:

  • Norwex Microfiber has the ability to remove up to 99% of bacteria from a surface with only water when following the proper care and use instructions.
  • Earth-friendly—each set of three Counter Cloths is made from 50% recycled materials and constructed of 1.3 recycled plastic bottles (500 ml).
  • Save money and protect the environment by reducing paper towel consumption
  • Unique new weave absorbs spills fast.
  • Quick-drying so they’re ready to use again soon.
  • The BacLock* in the cloth—our micro silver antibacterial agent—goes to work to self-purify and inhibit odors from bacteria, mold and mildew growth within the cloth within 24 hours so that it is ready to use again.
  • Set of three so you’ll always have one handy
  • Each cloth is half the size of a full-size paper towel.
  • Both sets of colors fit any décor and also look great together!
  • Up to 12 Counter Cloths fold for easy storage in the Counter Cloth Box, so they’re always convenient when you need them.

Easy Butter Tarts

Butter tarts are made out to be difficult to make, not so.  They are a beautiful addition to your Christmas baking and everyone is so impressed.  This is my recipe, and I make it easier by using frozen tart shells.  Honestly frozen tart shells are the best thing since sliced bread.  If you want to make pastry go ahead, but be sure to add a couple hours extra on the prep time.

Baking Butter Tarts

This recipe is a “dump” recipe.  Add all the ingredients and mix; well you can keep the raisins until last and stir them in.  Spoon out the goodness and half fill each shell.  Bake until brown and set.  So delicious.

Assemble all your ingredients and turn on your oven.  Add everything into the small mixing bowl and mix until the butter is cut into small pieces and everything is blended together.  Stir in raisins or chopped nuts. Place two dozen frozen shells on a large baking sheet.  Fill the shells half full, they will bubble and overflow and make a big mess if you overfill.  Bake until they are brown and set.  Serve warm or cold.  They also freeze well.Butter Tart

Easy Butter Tarts

Ingredients

  • – 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • – 2 Eggs
  • – 3 Tbsp Cold Butter
  • – 1/2 Tsp Vanilla
  • – 1 Tsp White Vinegar
  • – 1 Cup Raisins (or Currants if you prefer) * Can also add chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients except raisins and blend until butter is in small chunks.
  2. Add raisins and stir
  3. Fill unbaked tart shells 1/2 full
  4. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes.
  5. Watch carefully, turn cookie sheet half way through if your oven is not even.

Give up Paper Towels, gasp!

This year, we have decided to try and push our “green” a little further.  The biggest area for me is using paper towels…for Everything.

It seems we are, maybe, a little late getting on the No Paper Towel band wagon; but seriously – I love my paper towels.  We purchase them at Costco in giant family size packages!  Did I mention that there is only two of us.  That’s right two people to use all those lovely paper towels.  paper-towel-4464577_640

We keep a supply under each sink in the two bathrooms; one in the kitchen; one in the garage and the remaining giant bag in the basement.  They become our napkins on a roll; covers for warming things in the microwave; tissues for my husband (I haven’t gone that far yet).  It has to stop!

Since joining Norwex, I am becoming more educated on living cleaner and greener.  Frankly, I love these products.  My paper towel rescue is going to come in the form of a little house with counter cloths stored in it.  I’m excited.  The little house comes with six towels the size of a half sheet of paper towel.  This is what Norwex says about them.

  • These ultra-absorbent, reusable cloths feature a unique new weave to quickly pick up spills and messes in the kitchen, bathroom —really anywhere! Constructed from Norwex Microfiber made from 50% recycled materials in the same size as a half-sheet of paper towel, each set contains almost a whole recycled plastic bottle (500 ml), so you’re helping to clean up the world every time you quickly clean up!   Video

So not only are you saving paper towels but the cloth itself is recycled and look how cute this is.  I can’t wait to get it on my counter.
